How to Hook 2 or More Computers Up to the Internet

Many people do not realize that with High-speed DSL or cable service, you can easily set it up where 2-4 (or more) people can use the internet at the same time.

If you have a high speed cable or DSL service, then you can easily hook up a simple home network so that two or more people can get online at the same time.

This can be great if you have multiple people living in the same house or apartment. You can all get online at the same time & share a high speed connection while you surf the web.

How to Make a Simple DSL/Cable Wired Network

First, you will need a high-speed service with either a DSL service or a Cable service.  There are plenty of companies that offer this service, and it will usually be offered by the same company that you use for you home phone or cable service.

Here are a few of the most common companies: Embarq, Sprint, Comcast, Charter, Verizon, etc.

The cost of high speed/cable service will vary & you can usually save money if it is bundled with other home service plans (such as cable t.v., home phone service, etc.).

Once you have signed up with the service & the company has installed it, you are ready to begin building your simple wired home network.

Before you can set-up your home network, here are the required parts you will need:

Computer Requirements:

• Your computer must have an Ethernet port. Most computers built after 2000 have this built in. It is usually on the back of the computer & it has a place to plug in an Ethernet cable (the plug looks like a telephone jack (only slightly larger).

Additional Parts You Will Need:

• DSL or Cable Modem (usually provided by the high-speed/cable company for a charge)

• Basic 4 Port Ethernet Home Router (can be purchased at any Wal-mart, Best Buy, Circuit City, eBay, or Amazon.com)

• Ethernet Cables (you will need 3 cables to hook up 2 computers at the same time. If you want to hookup more computers, you will need 1 additional cable for each computer).

How to Hook Up Your High-Speed DSL Networks

First you will take the standard phone line (that comes out of the wall jack) & plug it into your modem.

Then, you will plug an Ethernet Cable into the modem, and connect it into the incoming port on the Router.

Now, you should have 2-4 outgoing ports on your router. You can now simply plug an Ethernet Cable into any outgoing port from the router, and into the back of your computer where the Ethernet port is located.

Also, your router & modem will probably have a power cord that will connect into a standard wall outlet. This process should be self explanatory.

Setting up a simple wired home network is something you can do to allow multiple users to get online at the same time. Also, because it is a wired network, it is much safer than using a wireless network (and usually cheaper also).
